Sustainable Portfolio

Sustainability in the vineyard, the winema- king (vegan & organic) and other aspects.

Sustainable or rational agriculture is standard practice in the Villa Conchi vineyards. This vineyard management philosophy maximises natural methods that guarantee the future agricultural viability of the land. Biological, technical and other farming practices are carefully adhered to in order to maintain a natural balance and a viable agricultural future.

The use of pesticides, synthetic fertilisers and other aggressive and high intervention treatments are avoided

The use of pesticides, synthetic fertilisers and other aggressive and high intervention treatments are avoided with the objective of conserving the vines’ natural immune system and simply strengthening that in order to develop self-protection. The aim is to maintain healthy soils – for sure the best legacy for future generations – and as a consequence, healthier vines and grapes. There is no irrigation in the vineyards, dry farming methods reign which keeps yields low and good leaf canopy management is applied to generate shade and reduce water evaporation.

As an example, possible insect plagues are avoided by applying the sexual confusion method to keep them at bay by avoiding their reproduction rather than killing them with pesticides. The problem with pesticides, apart from that of leaving harmful residues on the vines and in the grapes, is that they kill all insects – the good and the bad (e.g. of the bad, the red spider that attacks the wood of the vine) – and that upsets the vineyard’s natural balance.

Sustainable practices are applied also in the winemaking and in the production process. All of the Villa Conchi Cava’s are Vegan Friendly and there’s an organic Cava too; the objective is to go all-organic with the entire portfolio by approximately 2023. In the winemaking, sulphur use is currently kept down to the bare minimum possible, the use of energy is rationalised by applying gravity instead of pumping whenever possible and all water used is re-cycled to the highest degree in order to rationalise its use. The dry goods used for the packaging of our Villa Conchi Cava’s are as environmentally friendly as current technology allows; the use of re-cycled paper for all labels and cardboard shipping boxes, the use of water based inks instead of petroleum for all printing, avoidance of petroleum based products for the neck foils, lighter weight bottles to reduce the carbon footprint of the land and sea transport and the use of recycled glass for the bottles. These are just a few examples of applying sustainability throughout the winegrowing process, the packaging and transport too.
